From the archives (Alter Ego II)

Ink & Digital on Archival Paper

The body speaks what the mind fears.

A stark interrogation of the self, rendered in the sharp contrast of ink and intention. It traces the silhouette of a private, internal dialogue, asking the question we often hide from ourselves.

Artist's Perspective

The Anatomy of Hunger

An intimate exploration of “From the archives (Alter Ego II)” and the quiet poetry of human connection

Reaching back into the archives is always a visceral experience. It is like meeting a former version of myself in a dark hallway—someone I recognize but whose intensity still manages to catch me off guard. Alter Ego II was born from that specific, restless energy of wanting to peel back the skin and see what lies beneath the social mask, exposing the raw nerves of identity.

My process always begins with the line. I need the pencil to feel like an extension of my own nerves, scratching and gliding until the form emerges from the white void. There is a certain honesty in a bold black line; it doesn't apologize for where it lands. In this piece, I wanted the contrast to be absolute, leaving no room for the ambiguity of grey areas, only the sharp reality of the human figure in its most vulnerable state.

The eroticism I explore isn't about a performance for an observer; it is about the internal heat of the subject. It is the tension held in the curve of a shoulder or the weight of a gaze. By focusing on the female form in this way, I am trying to reclaim the gaze, turning it inward to explore the textures of our own private longings and the intricate architecture of our bodies.

I wanted to capture the moment when a secret wish finally takes a physical shape.
— Kaethe Butcher, Studio Notes,

The question "What do you desire?" is the heartbeat of this work. It is a provocation directed both at the figure and the viewer. When I integrated those words into the composition, I wanted them to feel heavy, like a demand for truth. We spend so much of our lives suppressing our hungers, and this drawing was my way of giving those silent impulses a physical space to breathe.

Looking at this work now, it remains a mirror of a very specific internal struggle. It captures the duality of the self—the person we present to the world and the 'alter ego' who holds our truest, most primal wants. It is a reminder that my work is a constant dialogue between the hand and the heart, a search for the most unashamed expression of what it means to be a woman in possession of her own desires.
