Grass as Soft as Cotton Candy

Ink & Digital on Archival Paper2023

To lose oneself in the softest places.

A study of surrender where the body yields to the earth. It captures the heavy, sweet stillness of a mind drifting away while the skin remains grounded in the tactile reality of the landscape.

Artist's Perspective

The Architecture of Rest

An intimate exploration of “Grass as Soft as Cotton Candy” and the quiet poetry of human connection

I have always been fascinated by the way a body occupies space when it isn't being watched. There is a specific vulnerability in the sprawl, a looseness in the limbs that only happens when the world falls away and the internal noise finally quiets. This piece began with that sensation—the heavy, honeyed feeling of a summer afternoon where the only requirement is to exist within one's own skin.

The blanket in this work isn't just a prop; it is a sanctuary. In my practice, I often use fabric as a second skin, a way to map the contours of the form beneath and explore the tension between what is hidden and what is revealed. Here, the grass and the cotton become a singular landscape. I wanted to translate the itch of the blades and the softness of the weave against bare skin, creating a tactile map of a daydream.

My pencil lines are usually sharp, demanding a certain kind of attention, but for this piece, I let them settle into a slower, more rhythmic pace. I focused on the anatomy of relaxation—the way a shoulder drops when the tension leaves it, the slight, honest curve of a spine at rest. The stark contrast of the black and white palette allows the shadows to do the heavy lifting, carving out the quiet spaces where the mind is free to wander.

I wanted to capture the precise moment when the body becomes light enough to float, yet remains anchored by the texture of the ground.

There is something inherently provocative about peace. In a world that demands constant movement and performance, choosing to lie still is an act of quiet defiance. By stripping away the noise and focusing on the raw, human form in repose, I am looking for the eroticism in stillness. It isn't about the gaze of another; it is about the body’s intimate relationship with its own comfort and the ground beneath it.

Looking back at these lines, I see a reminder to breathe. The piece has come to represent those rare moments when the physical self takes over and the spirit finds a place to land. It is a celebration of the soft places we build for ourselves, both in the grass and within the private corners of our own minds.
