The sea that calms me down

Ink & Digital on Archival Paper

A surrender to the waves within.

A study of the body as a landscape, where the rush of the world meets the stillness of a single breath. It asks where we go when we need to disappear into ourselves.

Artist's Perspective

The Architecture of Quiet

An intimate exploration of “The sea that calms me down” and the quiet poetry of human connection

I often find myself thinking about the weight of water, not as a physical burden, but as a sanctuary. In "The sea that calms me down," I wasn't looking for a literal ocean. I was looking for that specific, heavy silence that washes over you when you finally let go of the day’s armor. It is about the search for a place—or a person—where the noise stops.

My pencil is always searching for the curve that holds the most tension before it breaks into softness. When I sat down to work on this, my hand moved with a certain urgency, tracing the anatomy of a woman who is both vulnerable and entirely self-contained. The black ink and the graphite aren't just mediums; they are the shadows and the light of an internal dialogue.

There is a provocation in the way she sits, a raw honesty in her posture that I find necessary. Eroticism, for me, isn't about the gaze of others; it is about the intense, private relationship we have with our own skin. I wanted to explore how the body itself can become a shoreline, weathered but steady against the tide of emotion.

I wanted to draw the visceral craving for a peace that only another body, or our own solitude, can provide.

I chose to keep the palette restricted, allowing the negative space to breathe. That emptiness is the sea. It is the vast, white expanse where the mind can rest. By focusing on the sharp, dark lines of her form against that void, I am highlighting the contrast between our solid reality and the fluid nature of our desires.

People often ask me what the title means, but the question is actually for them. What is the sea that calms you down? For some, it is the touch of a lover; for others, it is the cold, sharp clarity of being alone. In this drawing, I am offering my own version of that refuge—a moment of stillness caught in the middle of a restless world.

Looking back at this piece, I see a reflection of my own need for grounding. It remains a reminder that even in our most provocative or exposed moments, there is a core of tranquility we can return to. The line doesn't just define the body; it protects the spirit within.
