Relaxation (Where is my mind)

Ink & Digital on Archival Paper

The body stays, but the mind wanders.

A study of a body in repose, where the physical stillness belies a frantic internal migration. It captures that fragile moment when the limbs go heavy and the consciousness begins to unravel, wandering into the white space of the page.

Artist's Perspective

The Drift of Skin

An intimate exploration of “Relaxation (Where is my mind)” and the quiet poetry of human connection

There is a specific kind of silence that happens when you finally stop moving. Your limbs find their gravity, sinking into whatever surface holds them, but your thoughts refuse to settle. In this piece, I was thinking about that disconnect—the way the body becomes a landscape while the spirit is miles away, lost in a fog of its own making. It is a portrait of a body at rest, but a mind in motion.

My hand always follows the curve of the hip and the tension in the neck first. I use the pencil to map out the anatomy, not just as a physical fact, but as a container for something restless. The lines are sharp and deliberate. I want you to feel the friction of the lead against the paper, mirroring the friction of a mind that won't go quiet even when the muscles have surrendered to the weight of the day.

Sensuality, for me, isn't just about the visual of the nude. It’s about the vulnerability of being seen when you aren't fully present. There is something provocative about a woman who is physically there, exposed and soft, yet mentally unreachable. It creates a tension that I find far more interesting than a simple pose; it’s a quiet rebellion against being fully known or captured by the observer.

I wanted to capture the exact moment the self detaches from the skin, leaving only the shell behind.
— Kaethe Butcher, Studio Notes,

I remember drawing the way the hair falls or the way a hand rests—small anchors to the physical world. The black and white palette strips away the distractions of reality, leaving only the raw emotion of the line. It’s a search for the 'where'—that place we go when we close our eyes and let the world blur into a series of abstract shapes and distant, echoing sounds.

This piece has become a mirror for my own moments of dissociation. It reminds me that relaxation isn't always peaceful; sometimes it’s a chaotic drifting. We are so often told to be present, to be grounded, but there is a strange, dark beauty in being elsewhere, in letting the mind wander until the body is just a beautiful, empty vessel waiting for the self to return.
