Kaethe Butcher Joins the Arthaus Artist in Residence Program

This past summer, Arthaus welcomed Kaethe Butcher into its Artist in Residence program — a partnership built to give her studio the room, the resources, and the reach to make her most ambitious work yet.

A Hug in the Garden framed as a gallery print

This summer, Arthaus welcomed Kaethe Butcher as its newest Artist in Residence.

The residency pairs one of contemporary illustration's most distinctive voices with the full weight of the Arthaus studio: archival print production, a dedicated storefront, editorial and social reach, and the freedom to make work without chasing the next commission. For an artist whose line has always prized patience over speed, that room to breathe is precisely the point.

Arthaus marked the occasion with a short launch film — a look inside the practice, the pressed flowers and the ink tests that become the finished pieces. You can watch it on @arthaushq.

What's ahead

Over the residency, expect new print drops, process notes from the studio, and a deeper look at the work that made Butcher's name — including A Hug in the Garden, the pandemic-era drawing that reached readers well beyond the art world. The residency is less a spotlight than a workshop with the door left open.

Follow along here in the Journal, or on @kaethebutcher, as the first new works take shape.
